Animals of Costa Rica App. Striking biodiversity at hand. ๐Ÿž๐Ÿข๐ŸฆŸ

This nature field guide lets you experience Costa Ricaโ€™s biodiversity in an affordable, comfortable and new way. It holds information about 4700 species between mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fishes, insects, and spiders.

To create a field guide of natural life in any country of the world is a hard task, but build it for Costa Rica could easily sound utopian.

This country even as small with its 51.100 Km2 is one of the most biodiverse on the world,ย  6,5% of all existent species on the planet live there. There are more than 500.000 species, and a lot of them are not described.

Easy navigation through an enormous volume of information is possibly one of the most significant features of Animales de Costa Rica.

Navigate through taxonomic ranks or use the search bar to find species of interest. You can select species you have seen during your trip and find out about their morphology, similar species, biology, ecology, behavior, and distribution.

The app allows enjoying the diversity and beauty between leafhoppers and planthoppers 29 families and 697 species.

In the order of the Lepidoptera Family (Butterflies and moths) the number of colors and different shapes itโ€™s stunning

Thereโ€™s a barely known world thatโ€™s worthy of understanding and enjoying. We found this species (Richardia Telescopica) so reflecting ofย  Costa Ricaโ€™s biodiversity that we decided to use it as an icon on our websiteโ€™s theme.

This crusade by air, sea, and land is a project that borns in the family, lead by the Guatemalan raised Austrian Zoologist, Gernot Kunz, who next to his father Richard, started many years ago the task of portraying the nature of this country. Later on, Gernot kept documenting from recurring visitations.

Gernot told to Pura Inspiration that the idea was born when they realized the vast amount of photographies of different species they had taken through the years.

The first approach was to think about making a book, but the high cost of editing met with the presence of an expert on new technologies, his brother Stefan. Therefore the plan changed into the making of an app.

Animals of Costa Rica is a project build from different places, field documentation takes place in Costa Rica, The work on content and identification deis developed in Austria, where all collaborations from the platform innaturalist.org are merged and finally Brazil, where programming takes place.

This app contains relevant information on species that maybe you have never seen before, but also on Costa Ricaโ€™s old friends, the American Crocodile (Crocodylus acutus)

An epic journey through the air…

Water

And land

The collaboration of well-known professionals enriches the Kunz’s work. On their projects, some co-creators stand out such as Biologist รngel Solรญs, Carlos de la Rosa, Erwin Holzer and the photographer Minor Torres Salazar.

Animals of Costa Rica App is a โ€œlivingโ€ venture that enriches every day through upgrades and new extensions. Without a doubt, it is an excellent tool for nature lovers, biology students, and tourist guides, but above all is a very accessible way to materialize one of the greatest assets of Costa Rica and maybe its most valuable; high biodiversity.

The “Animals of Costa Rica” app is available for Android and iOS systems. You can find additional information, in this link.

Gernot, I think thereโ€™s something on your eye!ย  ๐Ÿ˜…
